Which of the following is incorrect with regards to the timing of growth modifications?

A. Girls experience puberty earlier than boys and so earlier growth modifications for girls are often warranted.
B. The maxilla follows the growth of neural tissue which means it has relatively high growth at age 5 to 8 and then tapers down. Therefore maxillary growth modifications should be performed earlier than later.
C. Mandibular growth follows the growth of general tissue and peaks around age 5, levels off, and peaks again after puberty.
D. At age 5 the mandible has a higher growth rate than the maxilla.**

Your 5 year old patient has a mandible that looks shifted to the right and the maxilla is smaller than what it should be in a 5 year old. Which of the following is most probably true?

A)The patient has a unilateral cross-bite as a result of maxillary undergrowth
B) The patient has normal bite and the mandibular shift is unrelated to the maxillary undergrowth
C) The patient has bilateral cross-bite and in an attempt to get fossa contacts has shifted the mandible to one side resulting in a unilateral cross-bite appearance
D) The maxillary undergrowth has been compensated by mandibular undergrowth.

Answer: C: Pt has cusp/cusp contacts since his maxilla is small so he tries to get cusp/fossa contact by shifting the mandible to one side. In reality, this unilateral cross bite is a bilateral problem.
